From what we know about the telescope, Kalina can aim within hundreds of kilometres of a passing satellite. This would provide for the protection of an enormous region, of the order of 40,000 square miles (approximately 100,000 square kilometres), from the spying eyes of satellites equipped with optical sensors. The total landmass that makes up the state of Kentucky is somewhere about 40000 square miles.
