Wow, I haven't seen that before. This game is full of subtle details, that make each playthrough a revelation.
Are you sure the heater was working? Because an upgraded heater with six fuel should easily keep the house warm enough. Was the house still above freezing the next morning? Or had the heater burned through so much fuel, that it was too cold?
I find that 6 fuel lasts only a few hours before one fuel burns out, whereas the first one or two fuel can last days. It is more efficient to have two or three heaters burning little fuel, to spread the load, and improve efficiency.
I know that sub-15 degrees C tends to cause big increases in sickness, but unless you had sub-zero temperatures in the house overnight, I can't see how you could get so cold to freeze to death.
On the other hand, I had two heaters in my last playthrough. Not upgraded, they had 3 fuel in each, and the temperature was barely holding 5 degrees. I wonder if the extreme cold has been made even colder, demanding more heating than usual? Upping the difficulty level in the 1.2 patch, or perhaps "learning" your difficulty rating from previous playthroughs.
