My first successful game - a winter AAR

My first successful game - a winter AAR

Postby Cabbage Jack » Sun Jun 07, 2015 7:36 pm

I am new to this game (and new to this board!) and I finally had a run through where someone was alive at the end. It got me so excited, I decided to share the story (and what I did). It's in the form of Katia's War Diary (with a grudgingly written secondary diary from Arica). It is the Winter Start with Katia, Arica, and Marin.

I love this game, by the way. It is powerful, terrifying, and fun all at once. I hope people enjoy it, please share tips on how to do better, experienced players!

Day 1:

Katia's Diary

February 1 - 30 degrees, snowing
9:00 AM The city has gotten too dangerous to live on the streets. I've made friends: Marin, who is very handy with tools, and Arica, who arrived here quite at the wrong time. She is from a village outside of Pogoren. They have both lost everything. We have laid claim to an abandoned house with a swing set and tree house. I hope the owners escaped this place.

I am CNN War Correspondent Katia Romanov. I should not be here. I was supposed to film an interview with the rebel leader, but a landmine wrecked our Jeep and killed our guards. An ambush by bandits killed the camera crew and my producer. I grew up in this city and I knew where to go and hide. But now I was alone. I wish I was in New York.

Noon We spent the morning ransacking the house for anything useful. A process slowed because we had to clear all the rubble by hand. We need tools, that is for certain.

8:00 pm Too late, too soon. Marin assembled a great workbench, but night fell before we could get beds built or even get the stove lighted. It is going to be a long, cold night.

We don't dare work at night. The looters and bandits are out and we don't need noise drawing attention to ourselves. Arica offered to scavenge for food and supplies. She is going to a nearby gas station that has been looted already.

I will keep watch. Marin is a very handy fellow and he has a busy day ahead of him tomorrow. He needs to sleep. I insisted Arica take care, and also take the lockpicks we found today.

Arica's Diary

February 1
Katia says we must keep journals "so the world will know what happened." I agreed to be nice - Marin claimed illiteracy. However, the world can go to hell. Where was the world when my father died? My village was massacred? My nephew shot for sport? Today was long. I cleared rubble by hand all day and then drew scavenging duty.

I decided to check out a nearby gas station. Katia insisted I take the lockpicks.

Day 2:

Katia's Diary

February 2 - 33 degrees
9:00 AM Our worst fear was realized. Marin fell ill last night from the bitter cold. Bless Arica, by the way, she found coffee last night! I will drink some, to warm up and wake up. I am so tired from sitting guard last night, but we have no time to rest this morning.

Noon Sick as he is, Marin built us two beds this morning and he is finishing the metal shop while Arica and I clean out the rest of the rubble. I found some antibiotics in an upstairs bathroom and Marin has started taking them. I'm sending Marin and Arica off to bed in about an hour. Marin needs to rest and get better and Arica is going scavenging again tonight and needs to sleep.

6:00 pm I was very productive. I made a crowbar for Arica to take tonight when she returns to the gas station. I also fixed a radio! I am handy! They are going to be so surprised!

Tomorrow, we get to eat.

Radio News: The rebel leader warned that any civilians passing near the front lines do so at their own risk. I also found a warning about bandit activity increasing in the city. Then I found nice music.

8:00 pm My turn to sleep! They were so excited about the radio :)

Arica's Diary

February 2

I wish I had a shovel last night. I had to dig through the collapsed store-front by hand. I found coffee, but no smokes.

It was so cold today. Katia and I cleared out the last of the rubble while Marin made beds! Good beds! Katia said Marin and I should rest first. She got no arguments from me! Then she fixed a radio for us! I hope I find her more coffee tonight. And smokes. For me. I'm hitting up the gas station tonight with the crowbar Katia made. I fell in with good people, that is for sure.

Day 3:

Katia's Diary

February 3 - 30 degrees outside, 42 degrees inside
9:00 AM Arica found food and good junk we can turn into good stuff. She ate, then I insisted she go to bed and get warm! Then Marin and I ate. We each got a tin of food. The labels were worn off, so we joked about what a gamble we were taking.

I got canned peaches in heavy sauce. Marin had refried beans and Arica got chili without beans. It was a feast!

Radio News: There is a severe water shortage and we are being warned to boil snow before drinking it.

6:00 pm I sent Marin straight back to bed. We don't have enough fuel to keep the heater at full blast and I know that is stopping him from getting better. Marin went to sleep and I went to the black market. I traded water and sugar cubes for parts and tools to upgrade the metal shop and a real cigarette for Arica. She seemed happy for the first time since I met her.

Arica still won't tell me what happened to her, but has agreed to write some of it down.

I didn't sleep today and, with Arica going back to the gas station and Marin trying to sleep off his illness, I have guard duty. It will be hard to stay awake. :(

2 More days and we get to eat again. Arica and I talked, if she can find the parts we are making animal traps.

Arica's Diary

February 3

Last night I found food! real cans of food! and other goodies. No smokes though.

I promised Katia, so here it is. I come from Gravia. Gravia was murdered by the government for housing terrorists. These terrorists were people who were pressed into the rebels or fled from the army. Well, when the army massacred us for being sympathizers, I saw a different side of my father. He was a man I'd always loathed, hard and terrible. I was sure as a child he hated me. I'm sorry. I'm done for now. It's too fresh. I will try again later.

Katia made a saw. There was a barred room at the gas station. I'm sure it has good stuff. I can find out now, that is for certain. I had a real cigarette today. My head floated in the clouds and I smiled like an idiot for half an hour.

Day 4:

Katia's Diary

February 4 - 39 degrees inside
7:00 AM We were attacked last night by bandits. They stole all of our firewood and most of our water. They hurt us too. My face. I can't see out of my left eye. I think my left wrist is either badly sprained or broken. Marin was hurt too.

Radio News: The UN security council is discussing a possible peacekeeping mission. Oh please let this be true. Then more classical music.

Noon This morning Marin made a knife and then a set of lockpicks. It was so nice to see him up and moving around again, as sick as he is.

A little girl came to the door today looking for medicine for her mother. Poor child, we had none. I told her to try back tomorrow. I hope Arica finds some tonight. I'm going to bed now. I am so tired.

8:00 pm Marin stayed up until 4 and he insists on joining me for guard duty. He needs his rest, but I am too scared to guard alone, so I let him. Arica is so brave. I made her take the knife with her. She is all alone out there. Arica is visiting a grocery store tonight so we hope for food and medicine.

-------------------

Arica's Diary

February 4

That saw was perfect. I got cigarettes, a bottle of whiskey, jewelry, and books from behind that gate. The joy was spoiled when I got home and saw some bastards robbed us last night. They roughed up Katia pretty good and beat Marin pretty soundly as well.

Marin made a knife and lockpicks. We need more material so he can build more stuff. While I was sleeping, Katia talked to a neighbor kid whose mum needs meds. Marin needs more too, frankly. I'm hitting up a grocery store tonight to try and find some. Katia made me take the knife. That annoyed Marin because he wanted to protect the house with it.

Day 5:

Katia's Diary

February 5 - 30 degrees outside, 46 degrees inside (once we got the fire going again)

7:00 AM We were attacked again last night. These nightly assaults are getting terrifying. Marin fought them off with a crowbar, but he was stabbed in the stomach and, on top of his illness, he isn't doing well at all.

Poor Arica too: last night, she saved a girl's life last night, but to do it, she had to kill someone. At the grocery store she came up behind a government soldier sexually assaulting a young woman. She snuck up behind him and slit his throat open. She did a brave and very good thing, but it wasn't easy for her. She is a wreck. I made her eat some food and then I sent both of them to bed.

Radio News: Some government general was just on the news claiming that reports of atrocities committed by his soldiers were nothing more than "rebel lies." Tell that to Arica.

Life is hard. We have beds and, when we aren't being attacked, we sleep well. We have music and books to distract us from the war. Arica has cigarettes. I am out of coffee :( . I really think we need to patch these damaged walls. There are too many ways for the looters to get in at night.

It's funny. I was born here in Pogoren. I think (hope) my parents are still alive somehow. I wish I had spent more time with them before the war. Maybe I will move back here after the war.

I'm going to make a shovel.

6:00 PM That little girl came back begging for medicine again. It broke my heart to tell her we don't have any. You could see the fear. The poor child. Her mother is dying.

8:00 PM I tried to talk Arica into letting me scavenge tonight. I wanted to give her a break after last night, but she insisted. She is even going back to the grocery store.

-------------------

Arica's Diary

February 5

I killed a man last night. I felt his blood thick on my hands. I saw it spray. He gurgled a lot and clawed at his throat where I cut it open. It took him much longer than it does in the movies. He was a government soldier. I used Marin's new knife to sneak up behind him and cut open his throat. The blood sprayed everywhere: all over the girl he was attacking. She isn't hurt physically. I threw up a lot. I took his AK-47 home with me. Katia made me eat. I barely kept it down.

I'm going back out tonight. It will keep my mind busy. Every time I close my eyes, I see his blood splashing. I think I am going to be sick.

Day 6:

Katia's Diary

February 6: Really cold. 30s?

7:00 AM Mama Bear protected her sick cub last night. I fought off some looters with the crowbar. I think one had his jaw broken. I know he left some teeth behind. Marin got a lot sicker last night. I think he will die soon without medicine. Arica has been looking so hard, but no luck.

Noon We haven't done anything with the radio except listen to music today. We're trying to keep Marin's spirits up. We have to take care of him. If only the hospital wasn't snowed in. Arica agreed to let me go out tonight. She needs a rest and I can't just sit here day after day watching Marin die! I have to take a turn trying to save him.

Somehow Marin got out of bed today and made me some lockpicks. He called them a parting gift. Gallows humor. Poor man. He hasn't whined or complained once, even though he is so badly sick and wounded.

6:00 PM While Arica tended the fire, I went to the black market and traded for the antibiotic Amoxicillin and some meat. I don't know if it will be enough, but it has to help! I'm still going out tonight.

I think the meat I got on the black market used to be a cat. Is it wrong that I don't care? Arica is on guard duty while Marin sleeps. I'm so scared to go, but I need to.

-------------------

Arica's Diary

February 6
Another raid. At least this time it was the looters and not us who left wounded. Katia smashed in the mouth of one. Marin is going to die without meds. Last night I found a broken shotgun, all kinds of goodies. I even met the mother of the girl I saved. But no medicine. Poor Marin.

Good news though - This afternoon Katia traded for medicine. While she tended to Marin, I made a new handle for an axe head I found. Then Katia had us all eat to celebrate something. I don't know what. I think just tries to keep us from depression.

I hope Katia is safe and we have no bandits. Marin is too sick and hurt to help.
