I noticed that building materials disappear as you progress through the game, reflecting scavenging going on by others. I also noticed that since the patch this happens VERY quickly. It seems that by even turn 3 or 4 the amounts of materials available for scavenge drop dramatically. The last play through I did, by turn six about 2/3 of the piles of junk I checked turned up nothing. Is this supposed to be like this?

One other question - does scavenging still happen if there is not another character on that map? I know there are only one or two locations where there isn't another character, but if those sites don't suffer from scavenging then it might be smart to leave them until later in the game.

I don't know exactly, but materials dissapear very fast if it is cold. You can hear it on the radio. WHen u hear its going to be very cold u can expect that the next thing you hear on th radio is that people are scavanging the streets to get something for fire. That moment is when materials start to dissapear very fast. I could barely find 2 pieces of wood after 2 days of cold anywhere. After that most materials were still nowhere untill i picked someones stash. pretty realistic.

Pick up your Hatchet and bring it to where there are a lot of wooden furniture. This could solve the problem about fuel.
