It was made by Discovery channel (from my memory). They two seasons (about 20 episodes).
The content is mainly a experiment to see how a choosed group of people can survived in a apocalyptic environment.
I think some of its ideas can be used in the TWOM, like a homemade solar generator.

You're right, it was Discovery channel. Third season was watered down after an accidentally death during filming in 2012
Both seasons feature groups of survivors after an epidemic and a virus outbreak respectively.
Germans can find it on DMax but there are also most episodes on youtube.

While there are similarities the biggest difference is the ongoing war in TWoM. There are other groups in TC which are a threat but not like in a war zone (like Sarajevo was).
Other groups... hmm... maybe a possible multiplayer-feature? Several groups of survivors sharing the same war zone, bartering, hopefully not fighting each other...
I haven't played Anton yet. Maybe he's (could be made) especially good at electronic parts and mixing chemicals (ammo)?

Well I am just thinking that those devices the experimental subjects made could be introduce into TWOM.
