I see the PC version will be released next month. Will this game require Steam or another similar service to be installed to play?

Errr, it's on Steam since April 8th.

Games tied to Steam and a few other services like it, only work if you have an internet connection every time you try to play the game. I dont have the luxury of an internet connection all the time.
Will the retail boxed version of this game allow me to play without Steam?

Unfortunately, the box version requires Steam client, but it's required for activation only, then you could play it offline (and it's installed from the disc).
