Random Crashes on Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit (Steam)

I have a Radeon 5770 and I'm using the open source drivers. With the stock version of Mesa that ships with Ubuntu (9.1.4), the game just crashes on startup. With a bleeding edge version of Mesa, the game runs but will crash at a random point during play. The earliest I've had it crash was during a briefing, but it's also crashed during a mission and after dismissing the post-combat results screen. Here's the beginning of the output of minidump_walk when run against the dump produced by the latest crash:
Any ideas apart from switching to fglrx?
